Tourism leaders expect to win approval from Charlotte City Council later this month to spend $115 million expanding and upgrading the convention center while forging closer ties to Stonewall Street with a pedestrian bridge. Discussions and preliminary work began two years ago and, pending council’s decision, construction will start next spring.
In September 2017, council unanimously approved spending $8.5 million for planning and advance work. At that time, the council also backed a proposed $110 million budget for a series of projects to include a skywalk spanning Stonewall Street connecting the convention center with The Westin and the Whole Foods-anchored Novel Stonewall Station retail and residential project opened last summer.
